Telogen effluvium after illness or childbirth

Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding caused by a temporary shift in the hair cycle. It may start some time after a physical or emotional event, so the preceding months often help explain the change. Thus, medical surgical or emotion factors play a role.

Why shedding?

After a medical or surgical or emotion incident, hair in the growth phase will go suddenly into falling phase, thus you will have more hair loss. While, during pregnancy under influence of hormones the growth phase will be longer , thus at delivery when hormones are declining the hair in growth phase will move into falling phase , thus , significant hair loss will occur. [1][2]

How it differs from other hair loss?

Shedding usually affects different parts of the scalp without distinct smooth bald patches or scarring or redness . Pattern hair loss can coexist, so the description of shedding alone may not distinguish them. Pain, obvious inflammation, eyebrow loss or defined patches should prompt assessment for other causes. [1]

Tests follow the clinical picture

Assessment includes recent health events, medicines, menstrual history and diet. Blood count, iron stores, thyroid function or other tests may be appropriate when indicated. Extensive blood tests are unnecessary and targeted blood tests are more appropriate . [2][1]

Treatment and recovery

Acute telogen effluvium often improves once the trigger resolves or is treated, while visible volume takes additional months to recover. Minoxidil is not routinely required for most acute cases; it may be discussed for another indication, such as coexisting pattern hair loss. Oral minoxidil, scalp injections and platelet-rich plasma can be used in special situations only for this condition. [1][2]

Self-care and reassessment

Avoid crash diets, tight hairstyles and harsh hair styling. Maintain a balanced diet and correct demonstrated deficiencies rather than stacking supplements. Seek reassessment if shedding lasts more than six months, density continues to decline or new symptoms develop. Discuss any hair treatment before use while breastfeeding. [1][3]

Key point

Addressing the trigger and allowing time for the hair cycle are central. Not every episode after childbirth or illness needs medication. [1][2][3]
